about

"Rainbow Slicer is back with a new two song release entitled 'Professional Market Volume' and it's a drastically different beast from the Rainbow Slicer we knew before. Just compare the covers of the last record to this: 'Autoschediasm' was a wash of dark, muted and blurred colours, stretched and without edges or any desire to be in focus, and that helped echo the music contained within. Featuring long extended pieces that took time to show their meaning (opening track 'Club Nihilist' spanned almost 14 minutes) and even when they did it was often hidden behind dense layers of swirling psychedelia and percussion that could be mistaken for the sound of enemy artillery.

Take a look at the artwork for Professional Market Volume. The shapes are tight with obvious edges and the fact that you can make those forms out as shapes this time is a massive contrast in itself (is it a rollercoaster by the way?), and so much more colourful too! What changed? Well musically the template remains very similar - huge and brutal industrial drum machines throw out complex but encompassing rhythms while keyboards add additional layers of sound but this time the songwriting has become more precise, the arrangements easier to follow and those layers of sound are much more obvious in their melodic intentions.

'Room Nation 7' introduces itself with jarring high tempo polyrhythms (and man does it get frantic) but pretty early on your made aware of a pleasant keyboard motif that contrasts with the insanely frantic drum programming that swallows the track whole and just when you need it most the keyboard comes back and provides a payoff for the entire percussive assault you just experienced. The whole thing is a huge step up in every way.

'Big Master' is even more of a surprise, as optimistic and fizzy keyboard lines enter as the main focus and shimmers over a more restrained backing track. The whole song hints at a bigger picture on the horizon, bringing to mind the retro leaning obsessions of sound and pixelated cityscapes which are carved off the back of 16-bit video games. These two songs are just the start of a string of releases for Rainbow Slicer, another 2 song single release is due to follow in the near future, and as these songs show there's everything to look forward to and nothing to be expected."

about

Rainbow Slicer Bristol, UK

Rainbow Slicer’s undulating improvisations transcends it’s hardware heart through it’s nihilistic techno musings into something akin to Steve Reich and Richard Pinhas having a fight in a dive bar while Moroder hurls he-said she-said jabs from the corner. All in all, a good night out. ... more
